Word Definition

The fabric made by hand at home on a loom.

The cloth was made from "warp" and "weft" threads. The warp threads were wound onto a drum - these are longitudinal threads, and the weft threads were passed between the warp threads perpendicular to the warp threads - these are transverse threads.

One piece of homespun cloth was called a "saw". The width of a saw was not standardized and varied depending on the loom on which it was made and was usually about 40 cm (and slightly less often 80 cm).

Homespun cloth was made from homemade hemp or linen threads, and even from store-bought cotton threads.
